  • Vidikron and Sony both had impressive projectors in the around $5K price point. The
new Vidikron Model 15 was shown displaying 1080i HDTV of some very nice eye
candy, which it did with aplomb. Color rendition looked to be spot on, and the video
dynamic range and black level was fantastic, especially considering the price point.
Vidikron has done a great job of producing units that look extremely nice on both film
and video sourced program material. This unit wasn't shown on film based material,
but looked great on HD video on a Stewart Studiotek 130 screen at 45" x 80".

New for a projector in this price point is the ability for motorized anamorphic optics
packages. Both the Vidikron and the Sony (VPL-VW60) support these now. The Sony
used 1080 SXRD (natrurally) panels that have been improved dramatically over the
SXRD panels used on the VPL-WV100. One of the areas where that unit was lacking
was in the area of deep black reproduction. Sony addressed that issue by doubling
the native contrast of the SXRD panels used in the VPL-WV60. There is also the
provision for aligning the panels to minimize any pixel alignment problems.
  • Texas Instruments showed its' new DLP, the Dark Chip 4. This chip was used to
excellent effect on a huge screen showing of cuts from the new animated feature film
Bee Movie, starring Jerry Seinfeld. The movie cuts were pretty funny, but the new
Sim2 projector was even more impressive. It was the new 3 chip, 1080p C3X 1080.
Pics to come, but the new projector will be available by year's end in colors such as a
Ferrarri looking gloss red, gold, and gloss black.
  • Also showing in the TI booth was a 3D HDTV demo using the Dark Chip 4 and a rear
projection TV. It was pretty darn impressive, but the required glasses were annoying
and didn't give a full field of view. Larger glasses would be an improvement.

Bryston's new entry into the
digital power amp and multi
room amplifier market. This
unit features a huge power
supply and 180 watts x 8
channels. You could also
use this for home theater
applications. Availability
should be early next year at
price point of around $3k or
so (providing Canadian
dollars don't rise too much
further). Not to editorialize
too much, but an amp like
this from a company with the
amplifier reputation of
Bryston, combined with some
of the fantastic, bargain
surround pre/pros either
available now, or soon,
(B&K, Anthem, Rotel, etc.)
makes one question the
viability of $6k - $8k
receivers.

New from Monitor Audio for those that need a high performance, in-wall home theater LCR
speaker were these W380LCRs. As with the Denver Broncos Cheerleaders seen
frequently throughout the Expo, the were very impressive from both the front and rear.
They (the speakers, not the cheerleaders) also use the inverted midrange tweeter module
found on Monitor's in-ceiling LCR, and have Monitor's Rigid Surface Technology (RST)
woofers.
Stay Tuned for More From the CEDIA Expo 2007 tomorrow.
The Mitsubishi HC4900
shown above is one of 2
new,1080p LCD home
theater projectors shown by
Mitsubishi at the Expo this
year. The 4900 is has an
improved version of the auto
iris in the  HC5000
introduced at last year's
CEDIA Expo. It features
HDMI and DVI inputs, along
with motorized lens shift,
focus and zoom. Price point
is $2,995 and the unit has
been shipping since mid
summer.

The real news at the show is
Mitsubishi's new HC6000.
The 3LCD, 1080p unit has a
Silicon Optix HQV video
processor and a new, high
speed auto iris. When used
with a 24fps input from a
BluRay Disc player, the
HC6000 can run at 48Hz to
eliminate frame rate
conversion problems. There
are 2 HDMI 1.3 inputs in
addition to a PC input on an
HD15, component video
inputs and, should you need
them, S-video and
composite inputs. The unit
also features glass elements
in the lens package with
motorized shift, zoom and
focus for easier setup. The
unit should start shipping
next month at a price point
of, hold on to your hats,
under $4,000. The video
from the 6000 looked pretty
good, but the demo wasn't
in an optimal setting. Then
again, how many people
view in one? The 5000 will
remain for a time, but at a
new, reduced price of
$3,495.
Shown by British
loudspeaker manufacturer
Monitor Audio were these
unique, new in-ceiling LCRs
with a pivoting midrange
and tweeter module. No,
that in itself isn't new, but
the convex midrange driver
sure is. Monitor uses it to
improve dispersion,
something that can be a
problem with in-ceiling
LCRs. Monitor terms the
mid/tweet module "Inverted
Dual Concentric Drive".
Price point is $300 each.
Also shown were the new
Platinum Series
introduced by Monitor
Audio at the Las Vegas
CES. They are now
shipping at $8,995/pr for
the Platinum 300 towers
and $4,295/ea for the
Platinum 350C center
channel.
Experiencing HDMI problems?
VizionWare hears your pain,
and is here to do something
about it. The VZ-S5100 HDMI
switcher shown above is one
of a few new HDMI related
products shown at CEDIA
2007 by the Texas based
company. Not only does the
5100 provide 5 input HDMI and
digital audio switching, but is
can correct the frequently
experienced audio / video time
sync errors. There are 20
different time delay presets to
accommodate virtually every
timing issue. They are
accessible via RS 232 or IR
control for use with home
control systems. The company
also showed their powered
HDMI cables which worked so
well they were used by video
display manufacturers
throughout the show, including
Vidikron, Runco, and Sim2.
Introduced at the show is the
company's fiber HDMI cable,
which is indistinguishable from
a standard, copper HDMI cable
in form and function, with the
exception of providing pristine
HDMI out to 100 meters.
Answering the prayers of
custom installers and home
theater enthusiasts
everywhere, DirecTV is now
shipping the new HR21 Pro
Series DVR / DirecTV receiver.
It has all sorts of CI friendly
features, such as detachable
rack mount ears, an Ethernet
port and an RS-232 port with
limited 2-way communication.
The serial port is just what
custom installers have been
waiting for to facilitate
integration with 3rd party home
control systems, such as AMX
and Crestron. Guide data is
not sent from the port at this
time, but on/off status, channel
number, and resolution are
available. There is a
mouthwatering 100hrs of HD
recording or 400hrs of SD
recording (or any mix thereof).
For those of you caught up
in the age old bass vs.
space debate, Velodyne is
introducing the new
MicroVee subwoofer. In a
miracle of packaging,
Velodyne has managed to
cram a 600 watt RMS
digital amp an active and 2
passive drivers into a 9",
aluminium cube. It doesn't
go quite as low (-3db @
38Hz) as some of the
company's larger sub
offerings, but promises
fantastic performance from
something so small.

Something else witnessed at the Expo is the
trend to new, narrower bezels on LCD TVs. At
left is the new Toshiba Rezga LCD TV, showing
how the bezels is about 1/2 the size of units in
the past. This trend has been adopted by
Sharp, JVC and others, in addition to Toshiba.
