Also debuted at the Expo
was another speaker in
Krell's Modulari line. This
adds a 3 x 8" bass cabinet
to the speakers shown with
the Papa Doc at right. As
you can see from the
bright blue speakers in the
shot at the left, the
aluminium cabinets are
available in custom colors.
Frequency response was
given at 24Hz - 30KHz for
both cabinets combined
and 47Hz - 30KHz for the
upper cabinet only. Price
for the combo is $36,500
the pair.

Krell had the best iPOD
sound at the 2007 Expo, no
contest, with their new Kid /
Papa Doc combination
playing into a pair of their
new Modulari speakers. The
Kid is shipping now and
gives the iPOD a fantastic
preamp section for $1500. It
will be able to interface with
the Papa Doc, which boasts
150 watts per channel into 8
ohms and 300 watts into 4
ohms. All Krell power amps
double power when the
impedance drops from 8
ohms to 4 ohms, just like the
good Lord intended an
amplifier to do. The price on
the Papa Doc was unsure at
show time, but the Modulari
speakers with it retail for
$10,500.

Also in the "I'm glad I got
that great bonus last
quarter" price point is this
new powered subwoofer
from Kef's Reference line.
We'll see the 15" beauty
ship around the end of the
year. Those of you with a
spare $11,500 will no doubt
be rewarded with excellent
bass performance. It sure
looked great.
Here's Onkyo's first effort at
an HD-DVD player. The
new Integra DHS-8.8
HD-DVD player boasts the
SIlicon Optix HQV Reon-VX
video processor, enabling
frame rates up to 60fps.
The HDMI output is the 1.3a
variety. It supports both
Dolby Digital True HD and
DTS HD high quality audio
formats. It will grace store
(and custom installer's)
shelves by Christmas for
$1,099.
Marantz was another of the
projector manufactures
singing the praises of the
anamorphic lens for 2.35
widescreen presentations.
Shown is one of the lenses,
in this case Marantz's new
LN-9101M ($12,995)
motorized anamorphic unit,
with the VP-15S1 1080p DLP
projector ($9,995). Another in
a line of well regarded
Marantz home theater
projectors, made better with
motorized optics, it uses
modified GENNUM VXP
processing, HDMI 1.3, and
dual 3-position variable iris
construction for better black
level performance. There will
be a long throw version of the
VP-15S1 available for an
additional $3,000. The lens
will also work on the VP-11S1.
One of the beneficiaries of the new DarkChip4 DLP chip from TI is the
new SIM2 C3X 1080. As you can see here, it comes in custom colors such
as the red and gold shown, in addition to gloss black. It was pretty
fantastic showing the new Bee Movie on a huge screen (considering the
magnitude of this screen, it really was amazing) in the Texas Instruments
DLP booth. It is fully compatible with 1080p / 24 for BluRay Disc play. In
the SIM2 booth, showing some beach scenes from Pirates of the
Caribbean Dead Man's Chest, it looked pretty darn good as well, maybe
even a touch too bright. Some of the scenes of sunlight drenched sand
were maybe just a tiny bit punchy. The Pirates demo was, naturally, in
Cinemascope 235 with an anamorphic lens. All in all the SIM2 proved to
be quite a projector for $30k.
SIM2 also showed the latest version of their HT3000 single chip, 1080p
DLP projector, the HT3000e, now with brilliant color technology. SIM2 can
also dynamically vary the color temperature of the lamp to best suit the
image on the screen. They were showing the film Hot Fuzz and it looked
really great, rivaling it's bigger brother in some ways. The colorimetry was
spot on as far as could be determined from the demo. The new color
system appears to work as advertised, possibly better. You can get one in
a month or so for about $16,000.

A great companion for their HD-DVD player would be the
Integra DTC-9.8 THX Ultra 2 preamp / processor. It also
includes HQV Reon-VX video processing, and has HDMI i.3a
switching, decodes Dolby Digital True HD and DTS HD from
the HDMI. It will tune HD radio signals, is XM / Sirius satellite
radio ready and has both RS-232 and Ethernet control
capability. A look at the back panel will also reveal balanced
audio XLR connectors and 3 component inputs with
component outputs for zone 2. Note the toroidal transformer
in the power supply. It's shipping now for $1,699.
For those who haven't the
space or budget for the
DTC-9.8 processor, Onkyo
introduced the new
DTR-6.8 THX sleect AV
receiver. It decodes high bit
digital audio form the HDMI
1.3a inputs. It's now
shipping as you read this
for $1,000.
Paul Barton himself was
on hand to explain how the
new PSB Synchrony sreies
speakers obtained so
much bass reproduction.
Given the size of the
facility, they were
essentially playing
outdoors, yet yielded
tremendous quantities of
very tight, articulate bass,
all the way into the
deepest octave. It was
pretty amazing, especially
considering the small
foot[print of the speakers
and the relative small size
of the bass drivers. The
upper registers sounded
pretty darn nice as well.

If you're dyin' for some
PSBs, but can't get the idea
of freestanding tower
speakers past the missus,
PSB will have these new
in-wall LCRs ready for you
by the holiday season.
Shown are the new
CW-150Es that can be
used in LCR applications or
as center channels for the
larger CW350E units also
being introduced by PSB.
The 350s are similar to the
150s, but an extra 6.5"
mid-bass driver are added
outside of those on the
CW-150. They include a
back box. PSB also
introduced a UL listed 70V
in-ceiling speaker with a
back box that will pass the
new in-ceiling installation
codes being adopted in
many communities.
Parasound adds this new
HDMI 1.3 switcher to their line
of high performance, half
rack space A/V components.
The unit has RS-232 control,
an HDMI booster for boosting
long HDMI cable runs, and
will switch up to 5 inputs to a
single output. You can have
one for $600.
