Kef was showing their new XQ series speakers at the Expo.
They were absolutely beautifully finished, and were show in
a number of finishes, in addition to the mahogany shown.
The XQ30 tower, above is 34" tall and contains one of
Kef's Uni-Q drivers and a 5-1/4" bass driver. The XQ50
center channel speaker uses the same drivers, but adds
another 5-1/4". The redesgned drivers have high
frequency response out to 50KHz, so Kef was able to
eliminate the super tweeter used on their previous
speakers. The XQ30 will be $2,800/pr and the XQ50 center
lands at $1,200/ea.

Shipping next month as the
replacement for the slightly
long-in-the-tooth TPS-2000L
touchpanel is Crestron's new
TPS-6L. The 5.7" color touch
screen has a higher quality
screen than the outgoing
2000L The new one
incorporates Crestron's 16-bit
Isys graphics. It also boasts
an amplified speaker and an
Ethernet port. Crestron is
using a 32-bit Freescale
ColdFire® microprocessor to
run the panel. As they did
with their TPS-1700C panels
a few years ago, they've
made the 12 side buttons on
the bezel optional. Why?
They say it's because
customers prefer it that wy,
but the more cynical in the
crowd feel it may be so they
can charge more for the
buttons, which many people
do, in fact, desire.
Two more custom install oriented gadgets from RTI are this
Zig Bee mesh network interface and the RCM-12 relay
module.

Here's Denon's new BluRay Disc
player, the DVD-3800BDCI. It uses
the popular Silicon Optix Realta
HQV image processor chip.
The rear panel of the
new B&K AVR-707
surround receiver. Note
the HDMI inputs and
Ethernet jack. The
Reference 70 preamp /
processor will be identical
except for the amplified
speaker output section.
Yes Mable, Mitsubishi
has their thin bezel LCD
TV entry as well. Shown
here is the 52" 52LT144.
The set looked great,
due in part to
Mitsubishi's use of
x.v.Color and a 120Hz
refresh rate.
Remote control
manufacturer RTI had
many new products for
this year's CEDIA Expo.
Soon to arrive is the new
T3-V color touch screen
shown remote control on
the LCD display above.
It will hit custom
installer's toolboxes for
$1,199. It has VGA
resolution and, like so
many other remotes of
late, uses 802.11 WiFi
for communication.
One of the great looking projectors at the show at the $5K
price point was the Sony VPL-WV60. A 3-chip 1080p LCOS
projector using Sony's latest SXRD variant of the LCOS chips,
reportedly doubling the native contrast ratio over the previous
SXRD chips. As with the JVC, Vidikron, and Runco projectors
at moderate price points, it has the necessary scaling and is
compatible with an anamorphic lens. The Sony now has
Ethernet capability and HDMI 1.3 inputs with 1080p/24
capability. As with its more expensive brother, the
VPL-WV200, the little Sony allows for panel alignment to
correct convergence problems. This is rare among consumer
projectors.
Marantz showed their yet
to be released Blu Ray
player, the BD-8002. The
BD-8002 was another of
the video components at
the show using a variant
of the Silicon Optix HQV
processing chips. It has a
126 MHz, 14-bit video
DAC and is 36-bit deep
color capable. It will arrive
in early 2008. Price was
TBD.
Something different from
Crestron was this new RF TV
distribution system they dub
the MM-DS-12 "Media
Manifold". It uses Time
Domain Reflectometry to
automatically adjust gain and
tilt for each RF output when
the installer simply presses a
button. That allows the best
possible signal at each TV
location (up to 12 TVs,
expandable to 24), something
that digital cable customers
will appreciate. As too many
with digital cable have
discovered, there are many
levels of "100% digital
quality".
This is pretty amazing. You can get worldwide,
live streaming TV right to your computer. Over
3,000 channels are available (Many of your
favorites, such a ESPN and Fox Sports Net, are
available for a low, one time fee. No matter
where you are, if you've got a broadband
connection, you've got satellite TV! Take a look.
