New NAD T-765 A/V receiver
uses a new card based
architecture, seen here. The
NAD line of A/V receivers
(beginning with the T-765)
will change to this new
architecture that allows for
changes in standards and
new features / functionality
so owners don't have to fear
the next technology change
requires them to replace
their receiver. The model
designations will not change,
but there will be a running
change beginning in Q4.
The new Denon home
theater and custom install
products include these two,
targeted at the custom
installation market. The top
one is the POA-3012CI a 12
x 30 watt (8 ohms) power
amp for multi room,
distributed audio
installations. The bottom one
is Denon's new car based
tuner. Accepting up to 5
tuner cards, the TU-604CI
ships with a dual AM/FM
tuner card, but allows for up
to 4 more cards to be added
with either AM/FM or Sirius /
XM. The tuner includes
2-way RS-232 and Ethernet
control ports.
Speakercraft had their
traditional, over the top
presence at the show, with
an outlandish booth replete
with dancers and a stage
show. Naturally, head
Speakercrafter Jeremy was
heard on the too loud,
distorted PA system exalting
showgoers. They did treat
everyone to a Doobie
Brothers concert, however.
A few of the available I/O
cards for the NAD line of
surround receivers. Now,
when HDMI 8.9 is released,
a receiver replacement
won't be necessary, just a
card swap.
Software giant Microsoft
finally had a significant
CEDIA Expo presence.
They were exhibiting Media
Center solutions and had a
large display of some of the
many boxes that now
incorporate variations of
Microsoft Media Center
solutions. (Shown here)
Sharp debuted their new
limited edition (LE series) LCD
TVs with dynamic LED
backlighting and sexy, silver
frames. The perceived
contrast was fantastic,
although not readily seen
from this shot. They will be
shipping shortly, and should
be available to most custom
installers by the end of the
year. Sharp will have a 65",
52" and 42" LE series LCDs,
wich all include Sharp's new
true 120Hz processing. The
new sets are "green", so will
consume less power. Prices
will be announced shortly.
In other CEDIA Expo 2008 news:
- B&K is now shipping their long awaited Ref-70 surround sound pre/pros and the
AVR-707 is only weeks away.
- Lutron introduced a new line of shade fabrics for their almost silent QED shading
products including very designer friendly suade like, and floral patterns. They also
announced the ability to dim certain CFL bulbs and LED lighting solutions down to
10%. One last piece of Lutron news; Lutron can now provide QED motorized
shading solutions for skylights.
- Sony is retooling their 400 disc DVD changer into a 400 disc Blu Ray changer.
Crestron also showed a Blu Ray changer, this one a 200 disc unit to go with their
new media server.
- Crestron was introducing many new products, as has become the norm at CEDIA
Expos. Another interesting announcement was soon to be released iPHONE control
capability. Speakercraft also announced the ability for homeowners to control
systems using their iPHONE.

Marantz, in addition to
showing their new surround
receivers, the SR-4003,
SR-5003, and SR-6003,
and their new Preamp /
surround processor,
displayed their new
motorized, anamorphic
projector lens. Priced at
$4,995 retail, the new lens
will fit not only Marantz DLP
projectors, but also the
HD-ILA projectors from JVC
and Sony SXRD home
theater projectors that
support 2.35 scaling modes.
Sony's display of their new,
240Hz Motion Flow
technology was an
extremely popular
destination, as the Sony
booth at CEDIA typically is.
LG was another of the CEDIA
exhibitors debuting either LED
backlit LCD TVs or thin form
factor LCD TVs. In LG's case
they had both on display,
including this 47", 1080p LED
backlit LCD TV; the 47LG90.
LG uses an ambient light
sensor to detect room light
and adjust the set's image
accordingly. The picture
looked good and as is the
case with the dynamic LED
driven LCD sets from other
manufacturers, the black level
was great.
