Explained
Velodyne used this year's
CEDIA Expo to promote their
25th anniversary. They also
introduced a few new
subwoofer lines. The Optimum
series replaces their well
regarded SPL-R line. The
Optimum series subs look
better due to revised cabinets
with a cool looking taper
design and are available in
black lacquer and high gloss
cherry finishes. They boast
3db higher output than the old
SPL-R series too. In addition
their display is much improved.
They now show an actual
number for each parameter,
whereas the old subwoofers
made the user count LED
blinks. This new system is
much better! Prices are
pegged at $1,299, $1,699,
and $1,899 for the 8", 10" and
12" versions of the new subs.
RMS power increases from
1,000 watts to 1,200.
Another new subwoofer
announcement from the
busy boys at Velodyne
includes the DEQ-R series
subs. One slot down the line
from the optimum series,
these are targeted at home
theater owners that are
looking at solid bang for the
buck. They include the
Auto-EQ as with the
Optimum series, but with
only 5 bands, rather than 7.
There are 4 remote
accessable, user adjustable
presets, as with the Optimum
series subs.  The DEQ-R
series includes the DEQ-8R
($599), DEQ-10R ($699),
DEQ-12R ($799), and
DEQ-15R ($1,099). RMS
power from their high
efficiency, digital, class 'D'
amps is 180, 195, 225, and
750 watts, respectively.
Not wanting to leave the custom
installers out in the cold at a
CEDIA Expo, Velodyne also
announced their new SC series
of custom install subwoofers.
These have been shipping for
about 60 days now, and unlike
many custom installation
subwoofer solutions, are
completely retrofittable. The SC
series includes completely
enclosed subs for in wall, and
in-floor applications. The
SC-600IW (for in-wall
applications, naturally) uses a
very innovative, oval driver /
round passive radiator
combination mounted at angles
to one another. It really delivers
excellent bass, especially for
those used to muddy, anemic
bass from in-wall subwoofers.
They are remotely amplified,
and are less expensive than
Velodyne's current in-wall
solutions, the SC-1250. The
SC-600 amp / speaker combo
runs $999. The driver module
fits in a standard, 2x4 wall
cavity.
Mitsubishi Diamond Series Home Theater Projectors -
Mitsubishi debuted a new Diamond Series of home theater projectors, and showed
their new, low priced 720p, DLP home theater projector, the HC-1600, that was
released a few months ago. The new Diamond series projectors include the HC-7000U
and HC-6500U, both 1080p 3LCD solutions.

Both projectors have beautiful, piano black cabinets and promise to look great on the
ceiling of any home theater, although the wisdom of a gloss black projector on a home
theater ceiling can be debated. Both are extremely quiet, at only 17db in eco mode
(eco mode also gives 5,000 hr lamp life) and couldn't be heard over the din of the
show floor even though they were running in standard mode. The HC-7000U includes
Mitsubishi's new ultra-high-speed dynamic iris for great black levels, and it seemed to
work well. Both also support fixed anamorphic lens systems and include Reon HQV
video scaling. Prices are given as only $2,995 and $3,995 for the 6500U and 7000U
respectively.
For those that can afford to
own the best, but might not
want to spend quite what it
takes, Krell introduced their
new, smaller line of
mono-block and stereo
power amps. The new mono
blocks are rated at 150 watts
per channel into 8 ohms and
300 into 4 ohms. Unlike
Krell's Evo series, they will
not completely double power
into a 2 ohm load but come
close. Any one who's ever
heard Krell amps can attest
to their sheer might while
retaining the ability to portray
the finer details of the music
or sound track and these
should be no different.
Expect retail prices for the
new monoblocks at $2,500/
ea. The larger amps in the
photo are the stereo S275.
They have 275 watts per
channel into 8 ohms and 550
watts/ch into 4 ohms. This
new Krell stereo amp will run
you $5,500.
Among the many new products
Crestron introduced at this
year's Expo is their new
iServer. Unlike hard drive
based media servers and
traditional iPOD docks, the
iServer is an iPOD based rack
or shelf mount server solution.
The iPOD semi-permanently
mounts behind the door visible
on the right side of the unit. It
then forms the basis for the
media server, offering, as
you'd expect, stellar iTunes
integration. Another advantage
is the ability to upgrade for
merely the cost of a new iPOD.
This is a pretty neat solution to
the high priced servers on the
market that can run into the
mid 4 figures. Crestron's
iServer jsut cracks that barrier,
with a price of only $1,000
(less iPOD). Keep in mind that
Crestron products will still
require programming and
installation.

most advanced technologies
such as BDSS drivers and Pure
Aluminum dome tweeters for
spectacular audio performance
far beyond traditional flush
mount speakers. The model
