Sunfire showed their HRS series, including cherry finished
product (both the satellites and the subwoofers) to complement
the previously available hand rubbed, gloss black speakers.
The subs ship in a really cool, black cloth bag, not just a
cardboard box. The Washington State based maker of high
end audio products released high output satellites and LCR
speakers last year, and this Expo showed their new HRS series
of satellites.
The new HRS satellites uses the same ring tweeter found in
some cost no object, high end speaker systems. This tweeter
was reportedly developed when a frustrated speaker designer
stuck a needle through the front of a traditional soft dome
tweeter, and discovered ruler flat frequency response ensued.
Not to be denied headlines, the cast frame, 4.5" woofer has a
1" P-to-P excursion, a massive amount for such a small driver.
To maintain cone integrity during this long travel Sunfire uses
Kevlar for the speaker cone material.
HRS Subwoofers (in 8”, 10” and 12” models) feature two of
Sunfire’s most coveted technologies: High Back-emf, long-
throw woofers for extremely high output; and the company’s
legendary Tracking Downconverter™ power supply, which
provides cool, reliable and efficient operation
The cherry finished products will start shipping in November.
MSRP in each for the HRS series speakers are: HRS-8 ($750),
HRS-10 ($850) and HRS-12 ($950), HRS SAT-4 ($450 MSRP
ea), and HRS-SAT4C Center ($550 MSRP ea).
Speakercraft spinoff Proficient Audio
has added three audio/video
receivers to its quiver. The top of the
new receiver line is the M80,
equipped with the complete suite of
audio technologies from Dolby and
DTS, including DTS-HD Master
Audio, Dolby True HD, Dolby Digital
Plus, and Dolby Headphone. It has
HDMI inputs and outputs. Each of
the M80’s seven high-current
amplifier channels is capable of 130
watts output into 8 ohms (driven
simultaneously ??), and a full set of
preamp outputs allows connection of
external amplifiers. An RS-232
interface lets installers connect the
M80 to third-party control systems.
MSRP for the M80 is $1,250.
The M70 is designed for high-
quality surround systems on a
budget. It includes HDMI switching
and an RS-232 port for external
control. Each of its seven high-
current channels is rated at 100
watts into 8 ohms. It includes Dolby
Digital EX, Dolby Pro Logic IIx, and
DTS ES-Discrete processing. MSRP
is $900.
While the front of these units looked
impressive, with machined aluminium
faceplates, a look at the rear
revealed the basic, made-in-China
looking jack panel one might find on
any number of cheap A/V receivers.
LG Has Mark Levinson Tune the Speakers for Plasma and LCD TVs -
Not only was LG showing thin form factor LCD TVs with dynamic LCD backlighting as
shown in the first page of this CEDIA Expo report, but they have managed to make
their speakers disappear from the front of their TVs as well. Although the speakers
can't be seen, they should be heard thanks to final tuning from audio expert Mark
Levinson.
From LG's press release:
"all LCD and plasma HDTVs feature an invisible speaker system custom tuned by
audio expert Mr. Mark Levinson. This unique system provides a clean, polished look
and an enhanced auditory experience by increasing the “sweet spot,” providing a wider
field of sound. "
They did have a very sexy looking, thin form factor, red-trimmed LCD TV with the
aforementioned speaker system, but it wasn't playing anything when 1touchmovie
staffers were in the LG booth. See the TV below.
Bryston also showed two of their four
new 8-channel zone amplifiers CEDIA
Expo 2008. The amplifiers will be
designated the Bryston D-Series D-
130Z Hybrid and the D-250Z Hybrid.
The term “Hybrid” refers to the
combination of class D amplifier
technology along with a Bryston
engineered linear power supply design. "
Although the D-Series is lightweight,
highly energy efficient, and cost-
competitive with other multi-channel
products, these amplifiers also feature
input stages and power supplies
designed by Bryston—these are world
class audio products,” Bryston VP
James Tanner stated.
There will be four models of Bryston “D-
Series” Hybrid amplifiers rated at 90,
130, 250, and 400 watts per channel at
4 Ohms. Each model is application
flexible, with bridgeable channels,
assignable input configurations, and
independent level controls for each
channel. The D-130Z and D-250Z were
on display at CEDIA 2008 and the first
two models to become available. Unlike
the traditional 20 year Bryston
warrantee, these new amps sport 5-
year protection.

D-250Z MSRP - $5,695.00 Suggested

More 2008 CEDIA Expo News from Denver:
Canadian high end audio and studio gear maker Bryston
showed it's long awaited replacement for it's SP-2 surround pre
/ pro, the SP-3. The SP-3 was a prototype and production
versions may differ. From the Bryston press release:
"Bryston has indicated that there will likely to be three versions
of the SP3 available, including an audio-only version, an audio
processing/video switching version, and an audio
processing/video processing model as well. Current plans
indicate that versions two and three would boast eight HDMI
inputs with two HDMI outputs. The audio-only configuration
would have a single HDMI in and out.
Other features slated for the SP3 are two pairs of balanced
inputs, a set of 7.1 balanced outputs, a set of 7.1 single-ended
outputs, six pairs of single-ended analog inputs, one set of 7.1
single-ended analog bypass inputs, one stereo single-ended

optical digital output provided.

Lexicon MC-12 Free Software Upgrade announced at CEDIA Expo
For those lucky people with Lexicon surround processors, Lexicon announced the availability of a free upgrade
to their MC-12 surround processor. The new upgrade, v1.21 is available now. From the Lexicon Press release:
"Lexicon®, Inc. has made available the v1.21 software for the MC-12 HD and MC-12 HD EQ Music and Cinema
Digital Controllers. This latest update is free and acts as an upgrade of the v1.20 software. The v1.21
introduces compatibility with Pioneer Kuro Plasma and Sony KDS monitors. It also resolves the video artifacts
issue with Toshiba HD-DVD players and the loss of center channel condition that can occur while using the
Logic 7® multi-channel surround modes.
This software also integrates all features of v1.20, which offers support for HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia
Interface) 1080p signals at 60Hz, 50Hz and 24Hz frame rates and further underscores the MC-12 HD as the
industry standard for multi-channel processors for film and music reproduction. The v1.21 software update will
