First News!!
Thursday, Sept. 8th
- Crestron Introduces New Multi-Room Receivers, a New LCD Display Keypad With a
Jog Wheel and a New Small Touchscreen!
- 1080P DLP From Samsung, Toshiba and HP Look Spectacular With Demo Material.
- Sony Shows Off New SXRD Rear Projection TVs and Blu-Ray DVD Player. Fantastic
Picture!
The Biggest splashes at the show were from:
1080p video displays, iPOD integration, HD DVD, Blu Ray Disc and high contrast
projection screens.
Other great products included fantastic projectors at the $10,000 price point. The images
created by these projectors were beyond the realm of possibility at this price just last year.
The best I saw were the new Sony VPL-VW10 SXRD Projector and Vidikron's new Vision
50 DLP. Both were dynamite. It was hard to directly compare the two as they ere in
different rooms, with different material. The Sony looked brighter and may have had better
blacks. Both had great black levels and low level detail however. The Vidikron looked to
have slightly better color, but again, the color rendition on both was great . The Sony had
the tight pixel structure that SXRD delivers. Both projectors were extremely quiet, even
when standing just a few feet away.Click photos to enlarge
Jessica Simpson shows off
what HD-DVD is really
capable of. This is Toshiba's
player and newest DLP rear
projection TV. As you can
see, the picture is stunning
(and the view isn't bad
either!)
Toshiba's new HD DVD
player, the HD-XA1. As
you've no doubt noticed,
the unit gave a spectacular
picture when combined with
high quality source material.
Sony's new SXRD rear
projection TV, this one is
the KDS-R60XBR1. It runs
a full 1920 x 1080 pixels.
As with the other SXRD
based RPTVs from Sony, it
looks great with quality
source material such as a
good DVD, HDTV or Blu
Ray.
Sony's new VPL-VW10
SXRD Projector looked
fantastic!. It was shown on a
huge, 120" screen but still
was very bright. The
brightness didn't
compromise the black levels
however, they were superb.
The VPL-VW10, like the
Qualia 006, was extremely
quiet, even when standing
directly under it. Color
rendition was very good
also. It was definitely one of
the best $10,000 images at
the show.
The AVP-700 preamp /
processor from Arcam. If it's
like most of their latest
products it will sound superb
and generate a number of
reviews that look like the
boys at Arcam paid for
them, they are so favorable.
It has all the usual digital
surround capabilities and
balanced outputs. The
AVP-700 was shown with
their new 7 channel power
amp, the P-1000. They look
great in a silver rack from
Middle Atlantic
Earthquake Audio's latest
entry in the "Mine's Bigger
Than Yours" driver contest
was this chrome plated
monster (OOPS!, can't use
that word) I meant
behemoth.
The HRL-6178W 1080p rear projection HDTV from Samsung
looked just great on the demo material in Texas Instruments
DLP booth. The amount of detail and color rendition was
great. It was set up in a display next to 1080p DLP offerings
from HP and Mitsubishi. All looked really great but were not
playing the same material simultaneously. However,
subjectively the HP (on the right) looked the best, with some
of the best color rendition I've ever seen from a consumer
product of any display technology. Sorry for the bad photo of
the HP, it really did look superb, and that opinion was echoed
by many attendees.
One caveat on 1080p products - It was reported that many of
the 1080p HDTV units on display will not accept a 1080p
input from an external source. The HP set doesn't have that
problem.
Panasonic continues it's
tradition of great plasmas
with the TH-65XVS30 65"
unit shown here. With HDTV
demo material it was richly
detailed and had the really
good blacks Panasonic
plasmas are known for.
The new No. 51 DVD / universal disc player from Mark
Levinson and Madrigal Audio Laboratories continues ML's
tradition of ultra top of the line, spare no expense
performance and build quality. Includes HDMI and
component outputs.
This new projection screen
from Screen Innovations really
is an innovation. Called the
Mirage, and first announced a
few months ago, it dramatically
increases both apparent
contrast and brightness,
allowing front projection
systems to be used in high
ambient light environments.
The Mirage screen was shown
in the RCA Dome, with full
metal halide ambient lighting
as used for NFL football
games. It was pretty amazing
the image quality Screen
Innovations obtained in this
environment. Th above photo
does not begin to do it justice.
It is unknown how the image
looks in a controlled
environment or at night
however.
