If you've got a spare $6,499
kickin' around come
November, you'll be able to
get this new Sony 52" XBR2
LCD TV, the KDL-52XBR2. It
looked great, and proved
there'll be plenty of options
when it comes to great
looking, 1080p native
displays to go under the
tree this year. Perhaps
making up for the lack of
true 1080p inputs last year,
Sony equipped this LCD
with 3 1080p HDMI inputs.
NAD is finally upgrading their A/V receiver line. Shown
here is the T744. It's 5.1 surround, and offers 50 watts x
5 channels - measured with all channels driven. NAD
receivers usually manage to sound much bigger than
their power ratings indicate, and this one should be no
different. An illuminated remote and wide-band
component video switching round out the feature set.
Expect to shell out About 700 clams to bring this one
home for Christmas.
Adam Sandler looked larger
than life on this new 1080p
offering from Samsung, the
HL-7178W, 71 inch rear
projection DLP HDTV.
Naturally, it gives you full
1080p resolution. It looked
really good for a rear
projection TV of this
magnitude. It's in dealer
showrooms as you read this.
If you're really wanting a full,
high performance surround
sound system, but your S.O.
says "Not in MY House!!",
then it's a good thing that
Stealth Acoustics has
developed this three way
version of their hidden,
in-wall speaker. It is installed
and covered with mud, then
painted to match the wall, so
you'll never know it's there.
Well, someone might
wonder where the heck that
sound track's coming from.
The Stealth products
sounded very good in their
display, for this type of
speaker.
JVC's 1080p HD-ILA booth
gave a great account of
their take on LCOS
tecnology. Their new sets
looked great, but the pro
versions in the dealer
display off site had even
better color rendition.
Marantz will give those without
uber budgets a taste of great
home theater video with this
new 720p DLP projector, the
VP-4001. It uses the 1280 x
768 chip from TI. The color
temp is calibrated at the
factory for D65, and Marantz
is using a 5x speed, 6
segment color wheel to
minimize rainbow artifacts.
The price will be $4,099, and
this unit should continue the
Marantz tradition of having
solid picture quality.

Logitech debuts their take
on the color, touch screen,
WiFi remote to give you
simple control of your home
theater.
No, this isn't the venting
system for your new bomb
shelter, it's the new,
subterranean powered
subwoofer from the boys
at James Loudspeaker.
They have a great
reputation for outstanding
performance, if delivered
in unconventional ways.
This sub should be no
different, and promises to
make your landscape
shudder. It's not cheap,
but great performance
rarely is.
Lifeware software from Exceptional
Innovation had a huge and
unavoidable presence at the CEDIA
Expo this year. As befitting of a major
sponsorship position, their logo was
splashed on every conceivable
surface. They also outfitted the CEDIA
Home of the Electronic Lifestyles. A
major announcement is Lifeware
compatibility with Microsoft's UMPC /
Oragami mobile platform. Lifeware, as
a home automation platform, now
controls products from manufacturers
such as Aprilaire, Global Cache,
LiteTouch, Lutron, Honeywell, DSC,
Axis, Netstreams, Panasonic and
Russound, among others. They are
adding more partners on an ongoing
basis.
The quality of video display
delivered by the new 1080p
displays can be gathered by
examining this shot of the new
Sony KDL52-XBR3 1080p set, to
be available in November, as with
the XBR2 unit shown above.
Retail should be $6,799. Not
seen here is the beautiful, piano
black finish on the set.
In yet another move to
ensure that all manufactures
can deliver every piece of
the home theater pie, NHT
announced this stack of
electronics, comprising a
surround preamp/processor,
stereo amplifier and 5
channel amp. It's available
soon.
The Expo floor was packed this year as evidenced by these shots. The
new venue was fantastic, and those in attendance enjoyed having most of
the exhibits on display in a single building for a change.
There was no shortage of CEDIA
Booth Babes this year either! Sorry
not to have delivered a shot of the
DVDO girls. Well, maybe next year!
