Best looking plasma
display at CEDIA Expo
2007 for the first day (and
probably for the duration.
This one will be hard to
beat) goes to the new
Pioneer Kuro plasma TVs.
As is the norm, they were
showing Pioneer produced
demo content, which the
rendered with impeccable
precision. The depth and
gradiation of the blacks
and dark grays was
beyond reproach. The
color was spectacular as
well. In one scene with a
multitude of red flowers,
each subtle shade of red
was shown to perfection.
Teh 50" plasmas were
shown in 768p and 1080p
variations. Both were
spectacular, and this is the
non-Elite product. Hats off
to Pioneer.

Denver 2007  CEDIA Expo!
First News From the 2007 CEDIA Expo in Denver!!
Thursday, Sept. 6th, 2007
  • Crestron Introduces the DVP-HD digital video processor. The unit scales multiple
video inputs and will configure the output into different video windows. It's just the
thing to allow multiple programming in a home theater for someone who wants to
keep up on multiple games or other sporting events. Resolution is up to 1080p and
the windows are configurable and sizeable to suit any application. It comes in
configurations of 2, 4 and 8 inputs and outputs video in component or HDMI.
  • 1080P plasmas and LCDs abounded. It seemed you couldn't go anywhere without
    tripping over one.
  • Sony Shows Off a new SXRD projector at the $5,000 price point, the VPL-WV50.
Fantastic Picture, especially considering the price point! It's very similar to the WV-
100 but uses a UHP bulb instead of a Xenon unit. According to Sony reps, the video
    processing is different as well.
  • McIntosh introduced a 1080p projector, its first projector.
  • Crews from HD Net were on hand to get the scoop in native HD. They were
everywhere, so if you couldn't attend the Expo, you'll get to see it at home in HD.
  • Denon, Samsung and Marantz announced their next generation of Blu-Ray disc
players. Samsung's also plays HD-DVD. They continue to drop in price.
  • Toshiba showed a very narrow bezel LCD TV (see photos below) and announced 3
new HD-DVD players, the HD-A3, HD-A30 and the HD-A35. They will be available
later this month (HD-A30) and next month (HD-A3 & HD-A35) at prices from $299 to
$499. Toshiba also announced that all the new , 3rd generation HD-DVD players will
ship with 2 free HD-DVDs, The Bourne Identity and 300.

The Biggest splashes at the show were from:
  • The proliferation of Ethernet as a control and media transport medium
  • More IP enabled speakers
  • Digital audio amps from respected, mainstream audio manufacturers such as B&K
    and Bryston.

B&K's new AVR-707 surround receiver. It ads even more
features to the outgoing AVR-507, such as Ethernet
control, USB connectivity and a huge suite of inputs, to wit:
8 video inputs combined in any mix of component,
composite and S-video, plus 8 inputs each of optical digital
audio, coaxial digital audio, and analog audio. The B&K
receiver and Reference 70 surround processor have 6
HDMI inputs on a custom made input board with Slicon
Optix processing. The HDMI board is visible just to the right
of the Ref-70. RS-232 control is retained and there is plug
and play support for B&K's new CK-2.2 double gang
keypad. The keypad supports 2-way RS232 for the display
of meta data from music servers, digital radio tuners and
the like.
Crestron showed a
multitude of new products,
as has been the norm at
CEDIA Expos of late. Here
is their new 2-way remote
control, the MLX-2. The
MLX-2 uses Zig Bee
wireless mesh network for
communication and can
display meta data from
media servers and digital
satellite radio, in addition to
all manner of other info,
such as the status of lights,
room temperatures, and
feedback from your security
system. You're only limited
by your programming
budget. The remote itself
(sans programming) goes
for about  $750.
Toshiba has given the LCD TV a new twist by shrinking the
surrounding bezel. Not only does it look slick, the reduced
bezel gives more actual picture area (Click on the above
description to enlarge it). They are coming in 40" and 46"
sizes. Above is the 46" set. Image quality was very good
on the selected demo material in the short time the set was
observed.

New from long time
speaker purveyor KEF is
this cool new concept in
speakers, the
SpeakerLight system. The
small, 2" full range drivers
have  a sound that belies
their small size. The
addition of a sub should
only make them better
(take 2 subs and call me in
the morning??) These
units work well as surround
speakers in a smaller room
where being discrete is
more important than
blowing out the windows,
such as formal dining
room. For the above
speaker set the price is
$550.
Another cool problem solver
shown by the boys from New
York was this trio of new
digital amplifiers. 94%
efficient, they turn almost all
their power into sound, not
heat, so they'll help keep your
cabinet can be mounted on a
rack mount plate that can
contain up to 6 of them. For
multi room, distributed audio
applications, they are also to
locate in the room, keeping
the speaker runs short to
boost sound quality
(something that's sadly
lacking in too many multi room
installations). They should be
available by Halloween in 30,
60 and 100 watt versions at
$350, $450, and $550
One of the Bazillion (wasn't
that a dot com) new offerings
from Denon, the AVR-4308CI
boasts an impressive feature
set, including an HD radio
tuner, Dolby TruHD and
DTS-HD on the 4 HDMI (which
are 1.3a) inputs, WiFi
connectivity, streaming audio /
Internet radio capability, deep
color support, transcoding to
HDMI and up-conversion to
1080p using Faroudja DCDi,
and control via Ethernet,
RS-232, or rear panel IR input
jacks.
