One of the [power amplifiers in
the Krell EVO series is the 2
channel EVO-402. It puts out
400 watts / channel into 8
ohms. That, combined with
Krell's high output current
capability, should drive just
about any speakers. Price is
$15,000.00
For those of you with the spare change laying around, Krell
introduced its new EVO series of home theater components.
The surround processor in the series is the EVO-707 shown
here. It has the usual suspects with respect to inputs and
outputs but adds some interesting touches. It has a proprietary
digital link to allow playback of DVD-Audio and SACD discs
without degredation of converting them to analog for the journey
to the preamp. It is an 8.4 processor, with 4 subwoofer outputs.
Of course, it has full HDMI switching. To taylor the sound to your
room, it has a 12 channel, digital room equalizer. The EVO-707
is built like the proverbial tank, and should have the fantastic
sound quality Krell is known for. It will be available this summer
for $18,500.00.
Definitive Technology introduced
a pair of new home theater
speaker systems. This is the
ProCinema-800, a replacement
for an old favorite, the
ProCinema 80. The 800 uses
Definitive Tech's new, patent
pending BOSS mid bass
drivers. The ProCinema 800
system is $1,098.00.
Marantz  debuted this new
addition to its projector
lineup, the VP8600 DLP
projector. It uses the TI
HD-2+ DLP chip, combined
with 10-bit gamma
processing. It will allow
picture-in-picture, a rarity in
home theater projectors. It
will be available in March,
2006 for $6,499.00
These new 1080p LCDs from
Toshiba looked really great. I
know I've said that alot, but
there were some pretty
spectacular video displays at
CES this year. These Toshiba
LCDs were 42" and 47". They
are available in both
"TheaterWide" and "Cinema
Series". They use Toshiba's
new HIGH-SPEED LCD panel
technology, for an 8ms
response time. They use
14-bit video processing.
Definitive Technology's step up
home theater speaker system
from the ProCinema 800 is the
ProCinema 1000, shown here.
It uses a 5.25" mid bass driver,
vs. the 4.5" mid bass used in
the 800. Both the ProCinema
800 and 1000 use a 300 watt,
digital subwoofer amp. The
subwoofer in the 800 is, as the
name would suggest, an 8". A
10" sub is used with the
ProCinema 1000. The
ProCinema 1000 will retail for
$1,498.00.
InFocus debuted its new line
of affordable home theater
projectors. This is the 480p
version, the IN72. Contrast is
given to be 2000:1 in
calibrated mode. It uses TI's
DarkChip2  DMD, with an 852
x 480 resolution. The case
sure looked great, in a mirror
like, black finish. The bulb is
spec'd to have a 3,000hr life
and give 900 ANSI lumens
when properly calibrated.
Price will be $1,299.00. The
IN76 is 720p native and will
be $2,999.00. These should
hit the shelves in Q1, 2006.
One of the many displays
touting the virtues of HD-DVD.
It, along with Blu-Ray Disc,
was everywhere. There were
hundreds of titles from both
new HD disc formats on
display. Now if only we could
actually get a HD-DVD or
Blu-Ray Disc player to feed
our home theaters high
definition content on demand.
They should be here very
soon, March or April, if
manufacturers such as
Samsung and Sanyo have
their way..
