Intel VIIV - What is It?
Intel VIIV is the chip giant's latest initiative to dominate the home theater and home
entertainment PC market. It is an integrated technology platform that consists of several
parts, if you can pick the relevant bits from all Intel's marketing hype. The key points are as
follows:
  • Dual core, 64-bit processor fabbed using Intel's latest 65nm process.
  • Intel's 945G, 955X and 975X chipsets with ICH7-DH. These chipsets will have support
for advanced performance features such as SATA-3, dual channel DDR2-667
memory, and optimization for Intel HT technology.
  • Intel integrated high definition audio with 5.1 digital surround sound and support for
    7.1 digital surround sound
  • On board RAID support for storage redundancy and fault tolerance.
  • Intel's "quick resume" functionality - a key component for HTPCs, allows the system to
have quick on / off similar to a standard audio / video component.
  • Extended memory 64-bit technology

The integration of these components will allow for speedy performance, ease of use, and
functionality demanded by the average consumer if the HTPC is ever going to be a
mainstream product.

Some of the more traditional A/V like features touted by Intel include:
  • The aforementioned instant on / off
  • Low noise
  • Small form factors
  • Easy navigation with integrated remote control

These will be coupled with advanced features that many consumers want, such as:
  • Relationships with content providers for integrated downloading and management of
movies, music, photos, games and videos. Providers mentioned include: ESPN,
MovieLink, Napster, Gametap, T-Online, and MTV Overdrive.
  • Simplified home theater setup
  • Smooth playback of movies and videos, even in HDTV resolutions
  • The ability for simultaneous encoding and decoding so consumers can record and
playback content at the same time.
