PSB Sub Zero-i Powered Subwoofer
Paul and Susan Barton believe in their speakers so much, they put
their initials on every one, and with good reason. Throughout the
years, this Canadian speaker manufacturer has produced a number
of critically acclaimed speakers. PSB usually delivers this
performance at a price point below what would be expected for the
level of sound quality the speaker delivers.
How do they consistently manage to do this? They are one of a
handful of speaker manufacturers that use the National Research
Council facilities in Canada. Provided for free by the Canadian
government as and economic stimulus, these facilities enable smaller
manufacturers to perform testing and development on their speakers
that would normally be cost prohibitive. It pays off in a big way with the
Sub Zero, PSB's entry level powered subwoofer.
Normally an 8" driver combined with a conventional, 130 watt amplifier
couldn't be expected to perform miracles, and the Sub Zero doesn't.
What it does is deliver a level of bass performance that is uncommon
at this size and price point ($329.00). Usually, you're lucky to get any
real bass or musicality at this price. You usually get a cheap sub with
no virtues whatsoever. Not here.
With the Sub Zero, you actually get some real bass response. Even
though it's 3db cut off is not super low, at 36Hz, it sounds very
musical down to that frequency. For movie sound tracks the littlest
PSB delivers a level of bass that belies it's small size and
comparatively low power output. Even in a room that was really too
large for such a small sub, it gave a realistic bottom end when
watching the Shrek DVD, which does have some fairly low bass
passages.
In smaller rooms, it provides generous bass. I've used it in a few small
home theater systems and have been quite surprised by the level of
bass output in the lower two octaves. It not only gives a bit of output,
but is very musical too. Bass guitar sounds very realistic, with every
vibration of the strings well defined. Kick drum is tight, with only a
slight trace of overhang.
All in all, the PSB Sub Zero-i is hard to beat in the budget subwoofer
category. The edge PSB has from being able to use high end
development facilities is readily apparent in both the sound quality
and output. The Sub Zero-i is a great budget subwoofer that really
deserves a listen if you are in the market for a small, inexpensive sub.
