The plan was to create a contemporary, state-of-the-art, serious home theater and music listening
room. The equipment choices were the key to delivering the highest level of video and audio
performance. While the budget set some ceiling on product choices, we selected the finest
components based on specifications, reviews, and audition experiences. Budget allocation for each
component category was balanced with a focus on total performance. This balance avoided having
components that were either weak or very strong links in the performance chain.

As technology changes very rapidly and HD was in transition, it was decided to select products just
prior to installation rather than at the time of room construction, an 18 month time frame for the
contemporary home. None of the products used in the theater were announced or available at the
time of room construction, except for the projection screen dimensions. Assumptions were made,
however, that would support a set of component choices later in the project: in wall front speakers
would fit between 16in stud bays, side and rear speakers would be surface mounted, equipment
would fit in standard 19 rack spacing, the projector would be hung via a ceiling mount at the rear of
the room, and Cat-5 cabling would carry the video signal, using a
Gefen HDMI over CAT-5 adapter.

The 18in deep front speaker wall was built from a glued MDF/drywall sandwich. All walls were fully
insulated and glued to the supporting studs with resilient adhesive. The cutouts for the front
speakers were made after room completion and final product selection. The room is a combination
cinema projection and music listening space.

Room acoustics were satisfied via initial dimensioning to avoid standing wave reinforcement,
carpeting, strategic acoustic panel placement, rear wall bookcase diffuser, and speaker selection.
The speakers are BG Corp. planar line arrays with little vertical dispersion. The video is
JVC 1080p
LCOS with the highest level of video processing technology supplied by the DVDO scalar. The
remaining components: screen, amplifier, power conditioner, DVD player, and satellite receiver
support the critical choices of speakers and video projector. The custom equipment rack is enclosed
in a larger equipment room allowing for ease of access and wiring.

The contemporary design focuses on showcasing the components: speakers, projector, and related
equipment. The crisp clean lines of the room and its neutral gray finish enhance the equipment,
experience and room ambience. Home furnishings, rather than theater seating, give the room a warm
and soothing feeling and support its flexible use as a reading room as well. Windows are blacked out
when necessary via motorized shades.

Scene lighting control allows for mood setting in its reading, audio, and video uses. All equipment, as
well as the lighting and shades, is controlled via a programmable color touch screen remote with user
interfaces designed for intuitive functional use. The room functions exactly as planned. The cinema
video and audio performance is thrilling. The theater has recently been used as a screening room for
a local film festival.
