The dream of hanging a TV on the wall was the realm of science
fiction until the advent of the first plasma flat panel TVs in 1997.
Soon plasma was joined by LCD TVs. In the beginning LCD sets
were expensive, had image problems, and couldn't be had in the
larger screen sizes. Now, however, LCDs have emerged as the
public's favorite flat panel TV technology. In fact, of the major
companies originally manufacturing plasma panels, as of this writing
only 3; Panasonic, LG, and Samsung, are still making them.
LCD basically took over the marketplace for a number of reasons,
not the least of which is that they are offered in more screen sizes.
While LCDs range in size from 7 to 70", plasma TVs are limited to
sizes 37" and larger.
LCD TVs have made amazing progress in just the last 2 - 3 years.
Where 720p panels were the highest resolution offered, now, true
1080p is the norm, and most LCD TV manufacturers have
addressed the image quality problems that plagued these flat
panels, such as motion artifacts, inferior grays and blacks, and poor
off axis viewing. The motion artifact problem in particular rendered
many LCD TVs difficult to watch.
Now, however, Toshiba and most other LCD TV manufacturers have
introduced new technologies that eliminate these annoying artifacts.
In fact, most of the new 1080p LCD TVs look flat out fantastic. Even
the lower and mid range TVs will be able to please all but the most
jaded video critic. One of the key technologies introduced to help
fight the artifacts is the faster screen refresh rate. Traditional LCD
TVs refresh the screen at a rate of 60Hz, while the newer sets
double that, to 120Hz.
The differences are dramatic. LCD Motion artifacts are a thing of
the past, and combined with other technologies, these new TVs are
flat gorgeous! If the new TVs are compared with the sets of a few
years ago it's night and day. It doesn't stop with picture quality
improvements either. Other design changes have been made to
these TVs that make them more desirable. For example, Toshiba
was one of the first to introduce the thin bezel design to the LCD
world. This reduces the border around the edge of the picture,
allowing a larger screen size to fit in the same space.
Toshiba combines several industry leading technologies to give
their top ranked picture and loaded feature set. In fact, Toshiba, a
Tokyo based manufacturer with 161,000 employees, has been a
leader in many electronics and video technologies, including LCD
TV. For instance, Toshiba introduced the word to flash memory in
1985, and co-developed the DVD in the 1990's. Ironically, Toshiba
developed the CPU for Sony's Playstation 2. Sony failed to return
the favor a few years later by refusing to budge in HD-DVD /
BLuRay Disc war of 2006 - 2008.
