Velodyne SPL-1000R Powered Subwoofer
After using the latest version of subwoofer pioneer Velodyne's
SPL-1000 (MSRP $1,299.95) in several home theaters, I can let it be
known, it's my new favorite mid-end sub. The new SPL-1000, the "R"
version adds an IR remote control to the previous SPL-1000, but the
really nice thing is that Velodyne has managed to also give you a
6-band digital equalizer to help tame those nasty room resonances.
To top it off, you don't have to be an acoustician to use the EQ, it is
fully automatic. Just put the supplied microphone at your favorite
listening position, press a button on the remote, and the sub plays a
series of test tones. It uses these to set its EQ for the best bass. I
don't know if this EQ has the capability to really get the exact problem
frequency and knock it back, but in my experience, it usually provides
a noticeable improvement.
So how does it sound? Pretty damn good. Unlike many subs that
don't cost a small fortune, there's nary a trace of mushy bass and,
especially considering its small size, considerable output. I have used
just one of these in a fairly large room (that goes against my belief
that two subs is at least an order of magnitude better for even, in
room, response) and been quite surprised by the amount of "oomph"
it provided.
One of my new favorite bass evaluation soundtrack DVDs, Star Wars
Episode III, has some fairly demanding bass passages that the
Velodyne SPL-1000R handled with aplomb. Indeed, there was serious
pant flapping going on. The air battle scene in Hart's War was
likewise extremely dramatic, with the Velodyne delivering every pulse
from the Mustang's big Merlin V-12 as it roars overhead. For more
subtle duty, like reproducing the underpinning bass notes from
soundtrack elements such as trucks and doors slamming, the
SPL-1000R is highly qualified. It imparts little of its own sound to the
mix and can shake the foundation of your home theater, if required.
With a 1000 watt digital amplifier and 10", long throw driver with an
absolutely huge motor assembly crammed into a 12" cube, the
SPL-1000R is a dense little package that really delivers the goods. It
is a solid value that continues Velodyne's tradition of providing high
quality bass. At $1,300, it's definitely not the least expensive sub you
can buy, but has a great mix of performance and small size that is
fantastic for almost any home theater.
