The Ref-50 is designed and built by B&K in it's New York facilities.
B&K is an alpha development site for Motorola so they get first
crack at the latest technology from the chip giant. For the Ref-50
they use the Motorola "Digital DNA" 58367 DSP chip to perform the
surround processing duties.
A unique feature of the B&K is it's use of system presets. With
these system presets, you basically take a snapshot of all system
parameters and store it as a preset. B&K gives you 40 of these so
even if you use 20 for radio stations, you still have 20 more for
system customization. As an example, you can dedicate 5 presets
for your DVD player; 1 each for action movies, late night viewing,
dramas, rock music videos, and jazz music videos. You can then
set different audio parameters for each type of listening. These are
easily accessed from the remote by pressing the number of the
preset and then the enter button.
In addition to presets, the B&K features "plug n' play" whereby the
processor automatically recognizes the correct audio signal,
weather it be a digital or analog, for the media you are listening to.
Once properly set up, the Ref-50 is extremely flexible and user
friendly.
