There are two broad categories of home theater rooms - Dedicated home theaters and
mixed use media rooms. A dedicated home theater will be just that, dedicated to the single
purpose of watching movies and occasionally other programs. A dedicated home theater
room will have a "theater like" decor, featuring the trappings of a theater, such as sconce
lights, columns, theater style seating and possibly a stage and / or proscenium.
A media room on the other hand, is more akin to a family room or rec room. It's a
multi-purpose facility where you can watch movies, sports, sit at the bar with friends, or just
hang out and play pool. Some media rooms conceal the audio / video equipment so that
when it wasn't in use, you'd never know that it was also your home theater. Conversely
some display it for all to see, with imposing racks of equipment and indicator lights. Which
look you favor for your media room is entirely up to you, as many successful examples of
both exist.
Some things are easier, depending upon which type of room you choose. A dedicated
theater room will require more space, since you'll need a room in your home that is used for
nothing else. On the plus side, it is usually easier to do such things as acoustically treat an
dedicated room. You can design it from the beginning for optimum home theater acoustics,
because you're not concerned with any room uses beyond home theater. You can place
your audio / video equipment with less thought about how it will impact other uses of the
room.

people have a room which they can share functions, as opposed to having the space to
