Your custom audio / video installation or home theater system is only as good as
the cables, ends and connectors you use to connect everything. Please, please do
not use the cheap, screw on coax ends you find at your local electronic store. They
usually give a substandard connection which can cost you bandwidth, allow signal
leakage, and create internal reflections in the cable. This will manifest itself in
grainy upper channel reception, ghosting and other picture problems. In addition,
the cheap, screw on coax ends let in moisture. Coax cable is hydroscopic, meaning
they soak up moisture, causing signal degradation. Use good quality compression
fittings such as Snap-N-Seal or Digicon to help eliminate these problems.
If you are using an IR repeater system to control your remotely located components
and you have the IR receiver close to a plasma display, you must use a plasma
proof IR receiver to ensure reliable operation. Plasma TVs and monitors give off a
high level of IR radiation that will cause interference with your IR repeater system.
Plasma proof units have additional filtering to help eliminate this problem.

Satellite
Here is a great book on installing and
troubleshooting home satellite systems. It
is extremely comprehensive, covering just
about anything to do with home satellite
systems. It is Amazon's best seller on this
subject. If you do or plan to do satellite
installations, it is a must read.
