Zune FAQs
Q: How can I podcast to my Zune?
A: It's easy to get podcasts on your Zune. All you have to do is first save
the podcast to your computer, then send them to your Zune using the
Zune's software.
Q: How can I play iTunes songs on my Zune?
A: If the songs are iTunes protected, you'll have to convert them to MP3,
AAC w/o DRM, or WMA formats before your ZUne will play them. The
Zune is compatible with the AAC codec, but not iTunes files with DRM.
Q: Once you stop a song in the middle, can you restart it where
you left off and resume play back?
A: No, you can't. The Zune doesn't support bookmarking at this time.
You can pause it, however. Your Zune will give you the option to resume,
even if it goes to sleep.
Q: Will iPOD accessories work with the Zune?
A: No, if you have headphones or anything that plugs into the proprietary
connector on an iPOD, they won't work by plugging them directly into a
Zune because the connectors are different. You can use any audio
accessory that plugs into the Zune's headphone jack. The headphone
jack, located on the top of the Zune, is a standard 1/8" stereo mini plug.
Q: What kind of video can I watch on my Zune?
A: The Zune currently supports a number of video codecs. As of this
writing, both H.264 & MPEG-4 (.mov, .mp4v, .mp4), and WMV (.wmv),
are supported for video.
Q: Can I synch a Zune via WiFi instead of plugging in USB?
A: Yes, you can now synch your Zune via WiFi wireless networking (see
below). The auto-synching WiFi feature is included on the 3 new players
Microsoft launched, and older players will be able to add the WiFi
synching via a software upgrade. The software upgrade is very easy and
only takes about 10 minutes. The WiFi synching alone is reason enough
to get a Zune for many people.
Q: How can I encode video for my Zune if the video isn't in the
Zune format?
A: To convert video for the Zune, you can use the Windows Media Codec
built into Windows Media Encoder. To encode a video for your Zune,
simply select Windows Media Encoder from the Windows Media start
menu. Then you can use the wizard to do the encoding. You can encode
stored digital video files or straight from a digital video camera by selecting
the appropriate option at the start of the video conversion wizard.
Q: Can I play games on my Zune?
A: Yes, you can play games on the Zune's beautiful color screen. In early
2007 Microsoft announced that games for the Zune would be
forthcoming. After much waiting the requsite features have been added.
You'll need to be running the Zune version 2.5 software, released in May,
2008.
Zune Update Note:
Microsoft launched the 2nd generation of Zune players on October 3rd,
2007. Two of these media players are flash based, with 4GB and 8GB
versions and 1.8" color video screens. There is also a new HDD based
player with an 80GB drive, and a 3.5" screen. All the new Zunes have auto
WiFi synching to your computer.
May 2008 - Zune Update V2.5 is released. You now get TV shows for your
Zune, gapless playback, metadata editing, much improved GUI, Zune
Card support, and improved synching controls.
Can't Enjoy a Zune of Your Own Yet? Get a New Zune 8GB Flash Player or 80GB Zune. The 80GB Zune is a fantastic value among media players.
